Our People
Civic Law is a criminal defence practice.
A note from Sacha
I started Civic Law to do one thing, and to do it well: defend people charged with criminal offences in Cairns and across the Far North.
Being charged is frightening. You want to know what happens next, and you want to know that the person you are trusting with it knows what they are doing and will see it through. That is what this practice is built on.
David Jenkins has joined me as Senior Solicitor. David has practised in Cairns his entire career, both defending people and prosecuting serious crime. He knows how a prosecution case is put together, and what it takes to answer it.
We also have Olympia, our Practice Manager, and Alexander our receptionist.
Every new matter starts with me. I hear what has happened, tell you where you stand and what it will cost, and decide which of us will run your case. From then on, you have one named lawyer, start to finish, and straight advice about the evidence, your options and the likely outcome before you have to decide anything.

Our Lawyers
Sacha Sarah Smith, Director & Principal Solicitor
Sacha has spent virtually her entire career doing criminal defence. Nine years as a criminal defence barrister: lead counsel in jury trials and contested hearings, counsel in serious High Court proceedings including homicide and sexual offending, and hundreds of bail applications, sentences and appeals. She founded Civic Law.
David Jenkins, Senior Solicitor
David has practised criminal law in Cairns his entire career. Four years defending people, then two and a half years with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, deciding which charges in serious cases should go ahead. Now he is back defending people, and he reads the case against you the way the prosecution will.
